Prof. Dr. Thomas Bräuninger

Thomas Bräuninger is a professor of political science at the University of Mannheim. He joined the School of Social Sciences in 2009.

Professor Bräuninger studies how perceptions, preferences, beliefs, and institutions affect individual behavior and collective decision-making. From this perspective, his research attempts to understand voting and candidate behavior, as well as party competition in different electoral environments, coalition politics and legislative decision-making, perception bias, belief formation, and disinformation strategies in domestic and international politics. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on game theory, political institutions, comparative politics, and research design. His work has been published in leading social science journals, including the Journal of Politics, Political Analysis, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and the Journal of Theoretical Politics.

Prof. Bräuninger received his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Mannheim in 2001. He worked at the University of Mainz, the University of Konstanz, Trinity College Dublin, and the University of Pittsburgh. He has been Dean of the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) at Mannheim, Co-Director of the Center for Junior Research Fellows at Konstanz, co-editor of the American Political Science Review and Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz.
